Over 320 Beats Per Minute: Why I Chose the Owlet Dream Duo 3 for My Second Daughter

Some moments as a mother stay with you forever. My first daughter was just three weeks old when she had to be rushed to intensive care. Her heart suddenly started beating over 320 times per minute. The doctors diagnosed supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) — a cardiac arrhythmia where the heart suddenly beats at an extremely high rate. In my daughter’s case, it fluctuated between 280 and over 320 beats per minute. To stop the racing heart, the doctors first used a cold stimulus on her face, and she then had to stay in intensive care and take medication — a beta blocker — for an extended period of time.

Today she’s doing well. But that experience changed the way I look at baby sleep forever. And that’s exactly why I’m writing this article: not to cause fear, but because I want other parents to know that this exists.

What I Want Every Parent to Know

Supraventricular tachycardia is almost impossible to detect visually in a baby. There’s no obvious warning sign.

What I noticed at the time, and what you can watch for:

  • Your baby looks unusually pale, greyish, or sweaty for no apparent reason
  • They suddenly refuse to feed or are drinking much less than usual
  • They’re breathing noticeably fast or seem limp and unresponsive
  • When you hold them close, you can feel their little heart beating unusually fast

If any of this sounds familiar, or if you simply feel something is off: go to your paediatrician, or call the emergency number (144) immediately. Your instinct as a parent is a valid and important signal. It’s always better to check once too often than once too little.

One more important thing: the cold stimulus the doctors used for my daughter must only be applied by medical professionals. Please never apply ice or cold water to your baby yourself.

Why I Chose the Owlet Dream Duo 3

With that experience in mind, one thing was clear to me with my second child: I didn’t want to wake up every night with a knot in my stomach and have to check on her constantly. That’s why I chose the Owlet Dream Duo 3 — the set that includes the Owlet Dream Sock and the Owlet Dream Sight Cam.

The Owlet Dream Sock is a small, soft sock that the baby wears on their foot while sleeping. The sensor attaches to the sock with a small velcro fastener, and you simply slip the sock onto your baby foot. It captures vital signs like heart rate and oxygen saturation, along with sleep data, and the set sends everything in real time to the Owlet Dream App on my phone — the app is included free of charge. The sock is available directly from the official Owlet Switzerland store.

The Owlet Dream Sight Cam shows me what’s happening in my baby’s room at the same time — visually and with sound. It delivers 2K HD video with night vision and also shows me room temperature and humidity, so I can see whether the environment is right for my baby. And thanks to two-way audio, I can soothe my baby straight from my phone. That combination is what convinced me. It’s not just a classic baby monitor that transmits sounds — I can also see vital signs and sleep phases in the Owlet Dream App.

The Owlet Dream Duo 3 in Everyday Life

After a few weeks of using it, I can say: the sock is straightforward to use day to day. It’s small, quick to put on, and doesn’t bother my baby while she sleeps. The sensor attaches to the sock with a small velcro fastener, and you simply slip the sock onto your baby foot — it stays in place without being uncomfortable. The Owlet Dream Duo 3 with sock and camera is available here at the Owlet store.

The Owlet Dream App gives me a clear overview on my phone — sleep phase, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and how settled or restless my baby is at any given moment.

When I wake up at night and want to quickly check if everything’s okay, a glance at the Owlet Dream App is all it takes. The Owlet Dream Sight Cam shows me the room in real time — even at night thanks to night vision.

The Owlet Dream Sight Cam is easy to attach to the cot and gives a great overview of the entire sleeping area. It also measures room temperature and humidity. During the summer, our humidity was sometimes too high — the app flagged it immediately.

Especially in the postpartum period, when sleep is already in short supply, small things like this make a real difference.

An honest note: The sock occasionally loses connection briefly when the baby moves around a lot. The app reports it immediately. It was a little unsettling at first, but I’ve learned to tell when a notification means something needs my attention and when it just means my baby is finding her perfect sleeping position.

My Verdict

Every mother has her own story and her own reasons for what gives her peace of mind. Mine is the experience of watching a seemingly healthy baby suddenly need urgent medical care.

The Owlet Dream Duo 3 doesn’t undo that experience, and it doesn’t replace my attention or my baby’s doctor. But it gives me additional information at night and the ability to keep an eye on my baby. And sometimes, feeling more secure means exactly that: waking up one fewer time with a knot in my stomach. If you’re interested in the Owlet Dream Duo 3, you can find all the information here.

If you have questions about Owlet, or if you’ve had a similar experience, feel free to reach out. I know how alone you can feel in those moments.

Note: The Owlet Dream Duo 3 is a medical device — specifically the sensor in the Owlet Dream Sock. It does not, however, replace medical monitoring or medical care; it simply supports you in keeping an eye on your baby. For health concerns or unusual symptoms, always consult your paediatrician or call the emergency number (144).
