Travelguide Switzerland: International Balloon Festival Château-d’Œx

There are winter moments when everything feels still — and suddenly, a hot air balloon rises silently into the sky. That’s exactly how my morning began at this year’s International Balloon Festival in Château-d’Œx. Freezing temperatures, snow crunching underfoot, the first bursts of steam from the burners — and then the slow ascent of vibrant colors against a white mountain backdrop.

This year’s edition may be over, but if you’re planning to experience the International Balloon Festival Château-d’Œx next year, here’s everything you need to know — combined with my personal impressions.

Location: Château-d’Œx, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland
When: Annually from late January to early February
Duration: Approximately nine days
First held: 1979
Official website: https://festivaldeballons.ch
Admission: Usually free on weekdays, ticketed on weekends

The festival is considered one of Europe’s most important hot air balloon events and attracts international teams every year.

Château-d’Œx – Why This Location Is Perfect for Balloon Launches

Château-d’Œx is located in the heart of the Pays-d’Enhaut region at around 1,000 meters above sea level. The wide valley offers ideal conditions for hot air ballooning in Switzerland: stable air currents, generous launch space, and an open, expansive landscape.

What stood out to me most was the peaceful atmosphere created by the valley’s vastness. Even with many visitors present, everything feels pleasantly spread out. You can always find quiet moments — and those are the ones that stay with you.

Getting to Château-d’Œx

By Train

I chose to travel with the Montreux–Berner Oberland Railway (MOB) — and would absolutely recommend it. The route passes through snow-covered valleys and already feels like a scenic prelude to the festival. From the station, it’s only a short walk to the launch field.

During the festival, additional train connections are usually available. Check the official festival website for updated travel information.

By Car

Parking is available, but especially on weekends, arriving early is highly recommended. Parking spaces near the festival grounds and throughout the village are limited.

Experiencing the Festival: Balloon Launches & Atmosphere

The main balloon launches in Château-d’Œx take place early in the morning — and this hour feels truly magical. Standing on the snowy field, you hear the rhythmic roar of the burners while watching one balloon after another slowly fill with hot air.

One of the most impressive moments is when the first rays of sunlight make the balloon envelopes glow. It’s not a hectic event — it feels more like a shared moment of quiet wonder.

The official program typically includes:

  • Passenger hot air balloon rides (weather permitting, advance booking required)

  • Competition flights by international teams

  • Children’s activities such as tethered balloon rides

  • A multi-day supporting program

The current program is published on the festival’s official website.

Culinary Experience: Fondue with a View

After the cold morning hours, many visitors head to the food areas near the launch field. I tried the fondue chalet on the festival grounds — and it was the perfect ending after two hours outside in freezing temperatures.

Classic Swiss cheese fondue, simple wooden benches, and a direct view of the launch field. Authentic, uncomplicated, and comforting. Around lunchtime it gets quite busy, so arriving early or bringing a bit of patience helps.

Alternatively, the village offers several restaurants serving regional cuisine. During the festival, reservations are recommended.

Espace Ballon: Discover the History of Ballooning

A visit to the Espace Ballon – Balloon Museum Château-d’Œx is the perfect complement to the festival experience. I went in the afternoon when the weather outside started to change — a great decision.

Here, you can learn more about the history of ballooning and about the legendary launch of the Breitling Orbiter 3, which departed from Château-d’Œx in 1999 for the first non-stop round-the-world balloon flight.

Interactive elements and a flight simulator make the museum engaging without feeling overwhelming. Plan about an hour for your visit.

Practical Tips from Personal Experience

  • Dress very warmly — the cold on the field can be underestimated

  • Arrive early in the morning for the best atmosphere and photography

  • Stay flexible — launches are weather-dependent

  • Book accommodation early — the village fills up quickly

  • A festival pass is worth considering for multi-day stays

Final Thoughts: Is the International Balloon Festival Château-d’Œx Worth It?

Yes — if you’re willing to embrace the pace of nature.

The International Balloon Festival Château-d’Œx doesn’t need to be loud to leave a lasting impression. It’s about light, landscape, tradition, and that unique blend of engineering and poetry.

What stays with me isn’t a single highlight, but rather a feeling: standing quietly in the snow while a balloon rises silently into the winter sky.

And that’s exactly why I would return anytime. The festival can also be perfectly combined with a longer stay in the region — for example, skiing in the Pays-d’Enhaut area.
