Outletcity Metzingen: Shopping paradise with style

The Moxy Hotel in the Outletcity Metzingen

I arrived in Outletcity Metzingen around midday after a three-hour drive and checked into the Moxy Hotel. The location couldn’t have been better: The modern design hotel is right next to the famous Outletcity Metzingen. With its urban and stylish interior and relaxed, inviting ambience, the Moxy was the perfect starting point for my stay. The uncomplicated atmosphere immediately put me at ease.

Bollicine&Co. Champagne Bar – italienische Köstlichkeiten treffen auf Champagner

A highlight awaited us for lunch: the Bollicine&Co. Champagne Bar in the heart of Outletcity Metzingen. This daytime bar is much more than just a restaurant – it is a piece of Italy in Metzingen. Whether it’s fine truffle pasta or a cappuccino with sweet treats – everyone is sure to get their money’s worth here. The award-winning architecture and stylish interior create the perfect feel-good atmosphere – a treat for all the senses.

The largest outlet destination in Europe

Invigorated and full of anticipation, I began my tour of Outletcity Metzingen. The largest outlet destination in Europe offers a shopping experience that is second to none. Over 170 premium and luxury brands such as Prada, Gucci, Burberry and Moncler make Metzingen the top address for shopping enthusiasts. What makes the Outletcity so special, however, is the mixture of impressive architecture, perfect service and the opportunity to snap up real luxury bargains. Whether you are a fashionista or an amateur interior designer, there is plenty to discover here and beauty queens are also sure to find what they are looking for.

In addition to the impressive selection of brands, the guided tour of the outlet city was also exciting. I learnt more about the history and development of this unique shopping mecca, which is also successful beyond its borders with its own online shop. I used the free shopping time afterwards extensively to discover my favourites – and yes, my bags were well filled in the end!

Asian bowls and sushi at Restaurant Champa

For dinner, I opted for Champa, an Asian restaurant in a listed glass building in the centre of the Outletcity. The atmosphere: modern and relaxed. The cuisine: fresh, light and incredibly tasty. The warm bowls and fine sushi were a particular delight. With a satisfied smile about a successful first day, we finally returned to the Moxy.

Anyone staying at the Moxy Hotel – like me – naturally has more than one day to find the best deals. So we continued shopping on day two with lots of unique finds – including, of course, a few great Christmas presents. The variety of shops and offers at Outletcity Metzingen is truly unique. What’s more, Outletcity Metzingen really is a shopping city, so you can take a leisurely stroll through the city centre and enjoy a unique shopping experience.

Pure Christmas magic in Freiburg

The next morning, I travelled on to Freiburg im Breisgau, where I arrived at the Boutique Hotel Am Stadtgarten in the afternoon. This charming, stylish hotel impressed with its central location and elegant design. The friendly staff and warm atmosphere immediately made me feel at home and made me want to explore the city.

Guided city tour and visit to the Freiburg Christmas market

Together with my guide, I then discovered the most beautiful corners of the city on a Christmas city tour of Freiburg – an experience that truly enchanted me. We strolled through the Gerberau, whose picturesque half-timbered houses and historic brooks bring the charm of bygone times to life. The path led us on to Münsterplatz, where the imposing Freiburg Cathedral shone with festive lights. The ornate decorations on the stalls and the warm lighting bathed the surroundings in a magical atmosphere.

But the tour went far beyond the well-known highlights: hidden alleyways and enchanted courtyards showed me a side of Freiburg that could easily be overlooked without local knowledge. We encountered little details everywhere – ornately decorated window sills, Christmas wreaths on doors and the sounds of Christmas market music filling the air.

The festive atmosphere was omnipresent: fairy lights stretched across the streets and the irresistible aroma of mulled wine, cinnamon waffles and roasted almonds accompanied us every step of the way. The Freiburg Christmas market, which extends over several squares, was the crowning glory of the tour. The variety of stalls, ranging from handmade decorations to regional specialities, invited us to linger and browse.

I was particularly impressed by how the city combines its history with its modern way of life: Here, Baden joie de vivre meets an atmosphere reminiscent of a winter fairy tale. Anyone looking for a place to immerse themselves in the Christmas season and experience one of Germany’s most beautiful cities at the same time should definitely put Freiburg on their list.

I rounded off the evening with dinner at the Lichtblick restaurant. Located in the idyllic Konviktstrasse, the restaurant combines an elegant ambience with creative cuisine. The dishes here not only tasted great, but were also beautifully presented – the perfect end to an eventful day.

The Freiburg cathedral market – probably the largest ‘unpackaged shop’ in the region

The next morning, I started my day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel before visiting Freiburg’s famous cathedral market. This market is more than just a place to shop: It is an experience that perfectly reflects the Baden joie de vivre and regional cuisine. Here you can find everything from fresh products from the region to handmade specialities – a must for every visitor to Freiburg! And best of all – the market is open six days a week.

Freiburg Minster is undoubtedly one of the city’s most impressive landmarks and an absolute must-see for every visitor. With its imposing Gothic architecture and tall tower that proudly towers over the city, it immediately attracts attention. The sight of the cathedral, especially at sunset when the golden rays bathe the stone building in a warm light, is simply magical. The interior also impresses with its magnificent interior, the high, filigree windows and the calm, sublime ambience. A visit to the cathedral is not only a cultural highlight, but also an opportunity to experience Freiburg’s history up close. If you like, you can also climb the tower and reward yourself with a unique view of Freiburg and the surrounding area.

Personal Shoppping at Breuninger Freiburg

I then made my way to Breuninger Freiburg, a department store that not only impresses with its first-class range, but also with a unique shopping experience. Located directly on Münsterplatz, this store is a centre of attraction for fashion and lifestyle fans. As soon as you enter, you can feel the attention to detail and elegance that makes shopping here so special.

David Lehr, the friendly managing director – who knows some customers by name – took the time to show me around the store and introduce me to the highlights. It quickly became clear that quality is the top priority at Breuninger, not only in the selection of products, but also in the service. It’s not just about selling clothes, but about offering customers a holistic experience. The free personal shopping offer is an absolute highlight. With professional stylists at your side, shopping is personalised – whether for special occasions, a wardrobe refresh or simply to treat yourself to something special. Customers can retreat to the stylish personal shopping room and shop without any stress.

Breuninger Freiburg also offers a very special surprise for a break in between: the Rooftop Bar. When the weather is fine, it is the perfect place to enjoy a coffee or a cup of mulled wine above the rooftops of Freiburg. The view of the historic old town and the nearby cathedral invites you to linger.

Breuninger also impresses with its confectionery, which combines regional tradition with modern sophistication with fine pralines and fine chocolates. The confectionery is a real treat, especially at Christmas time – here you will find the perfect culinary gifts that not only look good but also taste great – such as the delicious macarons.

Freiburg from above: The Schlossberg – a breathtaking view of the city and nature

Before I set off on my return journey, I took the opportunity to explore the Schlossberg – a highlight not to be missed when visiting Freiburg. The Schlossbergbahn, a charming funicular railway, took me up the hill in comfort. The ride itself was an experience in itself, but the real highlight awaited me at the top: a breathtaking panoramic view over the rooftops of Freiburg and the picturesque Black Forest landscape. The view of the city, framed by rolling hills and deep green forests, was almost like something out of a painting. Especially in the clear winter air, the view had a very special magic that made me pause and savour the beauty of the surroundings.

The Schlossberg is more than just a vantage point – it is a place where the proximity of urban life and nature becomes clear in a way that few cities can offer. Up here, you have the feeling of escaping everyday life for a moment, even though the hustle and bustle of the city is only a few minutes away.

Conclusion: Two cities, one unforgettable shopping trip to Baden-Württemberg with architecture, cuisine and tradition

My long weekend in Metzingen and Freiburg was a journey full of contrasts: from glamorous shopping in the Outletcity Metzingen to the charming Christmas magic in Freiburg. Both destinations have their very own charm, and together they make an unbeatable combination.

Whether you want to experience the festive atmosphere at Freiburg’s Christmas market or shop in luxury in Metzingen, this trip has something for everyone. Pack your bags, treat yourself to some time out and let Metzingen and Freiburg enchant you!
