Soirée France at the Zurich Film Festival – An Evening of Cinematic Art and French Savoir-Vivre

I had the great pleasure of being invited by Atout France – the French tourism board – to this year’s Soirée France, held as part of the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF). When the invitation arrived in my inbox, I was genuinely delighted – an evening that promised to unite French cinema, culture, and art de vivre, right in the heart of golden autumnal Zurich.

Atout France is dedicated not only to promoting tourism in France but also to strengthening the cultural connection between Switzerland and France – something that was beautifully reflected throughout this special evening. With the support of L’Oréal and the French Embassy in Switzerland, the event became an unforgettable celebration for film and culture enthusiasts alike.

French Elegance Meets Cinematic Art – Vie Privée

At the heart of the evening was the premiere of the film Vie Privée by Rebecca Zlotowski, one of the most compelling voices in contemporary French cinema. Known for her nuanced portrayal of complex female characters and her emotionally intelligent storytelling, Zlotowski presents with Vie Privée a profound psychological drama that is both delicate and socially resonant.

The film follows Lilian Steiner (brilliantly portrayed by Jodie Foster), a respected psychiatrist who finds herself confronting the limits of her professionalism after the sudden death of one of her patients. Between truth and illusion, guilt and understanding, Vie Privée unfolds as a story that not only moves but lingers long after the lights go up — a cinematic experience as intimate as it is haunting.

With its graceful storytelling and striking performances, Vie Privée joins the ranks of French cinematic gems that the ZFF continues to celebrate with passion and elegance year after year.

The Atmosphere – When Culture Meets Charm

From the very first moment at the festival centre, it was clear that this evening would be far more than just a film screening. The Green Carpet shimmered with light and excitement — elegant gowns, sparkling smiles, and animated conversations filled the air, capturing that distinctive blend of cinematic glamour and French sophistication.

There was a palpable sense of anticipation as guests arrived, mingling beneath the soft glow of the ZFF lights. The evening carried a certain je ne sais quoi — that effortless French allure that makes even the simplest gesture feel graceful.

I felt especially honoured to meet Marion Paradas, Ambassador of France to Switzerland, Laurent Alberti, Consul General of France in Zurich, and Frédéric Meyer, Director of Atout France Switzerland. Their welcoming speeches beautifully underlined the importance of cultural exchange and the power of shared experiences — particularly in times when dialogue, art, and connection are more meaningful than ever.

A Feast for the Senses – The Cocktail Reception & Flying Dinner

After the film, the evening continued at the elegant NZZ SKY Lounge on Falkenstrasse — a venue that provided the perfect conclusion to a night of culture and sophistication. Inspiring speeches were given by Laurent Alberti, Consul General of France in Zurich, and Frédéric Meyer, Director of Atout France Switzerland, both highlighting the strong cultural and emotional bond between the two countries.

The Flying Dinner was a true culinary delight — a selection of beautifully crafted bites, each prepared with artistic finesse. Accompanied by carefully selected French wines, the experience became even more indulgent and refined.

It was one of those evenings where conversations flowed effortlessly — with familiar faces, new acquaintances, and kindred spirits who share a love for cinema and the timeless elegance of French style.

Personal Reflection

The Soirée France was an evening that will stay with me for a long time. It beautifully illustrated how seamlessly culture, cinema, and hospitality can intertwine to create something truly special. From the captivating film to the elegant setting and the inspiring people I met, every detail reflected the essence of l’art de vivre à la française.

I am deeply grateful to Atout France for the invitation and the opportunity to be part of such a memorable event. The evening was not only a celebration of film but also a celebration of connection — between nations, between people, and between shared passions.

Vie Privée is a film I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who appreciates emotional depth and the refined artistry of French cinema. It is a story that reminds us that what is private often holds universal truths — and that cinema, at its best, has the power to reveal them with grace and beauty.
